Assistance and hints for paving installer!
There are two methods of laying paving products
• Mortar bedding over either a concrete base or a basecourse
base
• Sand bedding over a prepared basecourse base AP40
or similar
Laying on mortar (this
will give you the best result)
• Once your base has been constructed, start your set
out from a straight line or 90 degree corner using string
lines in two directions (these will also be your height lines)
• Mortar bedding should be three sand and one cement
using approximately 20mm to bed the paver in
• Apply an acrylic concrete bonding agent to the back
of the slab mixed with cement and water
• This method easily adjusts any paver thickness variation
• As with all hand made concrete products you will have
some variation in thickness.
• The joints can be up to 12mm in width and grouted
using a fine mortar mix and a sponge and clean water to remove
any excess. If in doubt try a small area of grout and gauge
your success the next day
• Always mix the pavers up from two or more pallets
Sand Bedding
• After the base has been prepared you need to have
an even sand screed depth of 30mm
• Commence laying pavers from a straight edge or 90
degree corner using string lines in two directions
• Always lay off two or more pallets to mix the pavers
through
• As with all hand made concrete products you will have
some variation in thickness.
• Minor variations can be adjusted with the use of a
rubber mallet or a sprinkle of bedding sand under the affected
corner
• After cutting slabs to fit edges, use a specialized
binding sand like “pavelock” and sweep into joints
making sure that all excess is swept off. Lightly hose the
joint sand to set.
• Your paving joints should be no more than 5-8mm
The following products are available from Hardware
Stores to help you with your project:
• Cemkey Concentrate (concrete bonding agent)
• Firth ‘Pavelock’ (joint stabilizing sand)
- Nuplex Paveseal (urethane sealant)
This is a guideline only, if in doubt seek advice from a competent
landscaper.
Important Notes
• The sides of the pavers taper outwards
• 40mm in thickness but some variation will occur
• Colour is right through the paver, colour consistency
can not be guaranteed and variation in shade may occur
• With larger jobs blend pavers from several different
pallets
• As with all high strength concrete the phenomenon
of efflorescence may occur
• All concrete products especially coloured products
have a tendancy to discolour
• Paving must be completely dry before sealing
• We recommend they are sealed
• Pavers can be cut with a specialized concrete cutting
saw
• Never use a plate compactor on the paving |
